Practical experiences from actions
RoR - Rhythms of Resistance - is a network of activist percussion bands around the world who support protests and direct actions. They actively criticize and confront any form of domination, exploitation, discrimination or oppression. Their musical tradition is based on samba but RoR also invented new rhythms and an entire language of hand signs that is very useful for communication in actions. Through these signs and rhythms the group can for example warn each other of dangers or make decisions without lengthy verbal discussions.
The person holding the whistle, the mestr@, is directing the tune which is played. The whistle is passed around to share the responsibility among the members and play with the perception of hierarchy of this role. RoR bands use tactical frivolity as a tool in protests to keep demonstrators safe and present authorities with a different form of resistance than they are expecting.
On Sunday we have the option to join a low confrontation action at the Hambacher forest in Germany to practise our new skills in a concrete situation. We can support the demonstration against the clearing of the forest by the brown coal industry. Otherwise we can continue the workshop until Sunday afternoon.
